Tehran: Amidst the increasing tension in the Strait of Hormuz, an important resolution presented in the United Nations Security Council is currently stuck. Voting on this proposal brought by Bahrain to ensure the safety of commercial shipping has now been postponed. The constantly changing dates indicate that it is not easy to reach a consensus on this issue among global powers.

Was the voting on the resolution postponed in UNSC?

Voting on this proposal was earlier to be held on Friday, which was later postponed to Saturday. Now it has been postponed till next week. The new date has not been announced yet, which clearly shows that negotiations are still going on.

Did China and Russia express protest?

According to diplomatic sources, China and Russia have objected to some provisions of the proposal. In particular, both countries expressed concern over the point allowing the use of force, which is delaying the consensus.

Have changes been made in the draft proposal?

Bahrain has amended the draft resolution after criticism. The new draft has softened the language compared to the earlier draft and removed words directly related to binding action. Despite this the differences have not completely ended.

What arrangement is suggested in the proposal?

The revised draft calls for allowing necessary defensive measures to be taken for the safety of commercial ships for at least six months. This period can also be extended further based on the decision of the Council.

Is the situation in the Strait of Hormuz serious?

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important sea lanes, carrying about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Iran has effectively closed the strait since early March in response to US and Israeli attacks. Iranian Revolutionary Guards have given a clear warning that ships of America, Israel and their allies will not be allowed to pass, while limited movement is being allowed from some other countries by charging a 'toll'. The result was that on normal days more than a hundred ships would pass, now the traffic has almost come to a standstill.

Is its impact visible at the global level?

Due to affected oil supply, pressure on the economy of many countries is increasing. There is also a possibility of rapid increase in energy prices. This is why the international community is trying to make this route safe as soon as possible.

Is there hope for further resolution?

Although there is a delay in agreeing on the proposal, talks are going on at the diplomatic level. Experts believe that in view of the global pressure, some solution will definitely emerge in the coming days because this issue is not only related to regional but also economic stability of the entire world.
